Rat River
Home Up Holman Paulatuk Rat River

While the Rat River is not within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, the Dolly Varden char that spawn in the river make their way to the ocean by way of the west channel of the Mackenzie River and spend time in the coastal waters of the Beaufort Sea. During those migrations they are harvested by Inuvialuit, particularly the residents of Aklavik.

To help coordinate the fishing pressure on this shared resource, this plan is being prepared by the Rat River Char Fishing Plan Working Group, on behalf of the Aklavik Renewable Resource Council (RRC), the Fort McPherson Renewable Resource Council (RRC), and the Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee (HTC). Support was provided by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Gwich'in Renewable Resource Board (GRRB) and the Fisheries Joint Management Committee (FJMC).

The plan is now in its final stages of development.
